My Experience: Kirti Joshi

- My Experience at EARTHA… ‘Dance can only be a temporary hobby. You cannot pursue it later in life. Learn Singing instead…’ is a common advise given to girls . I was no exception. Still I stuck to my passion and started my Kathaktutelage at the age of 11 years. I dreamt of dancing on the stage on the beats of table and other Hindustani instruments one day.
However this dream was interrupted when my family moved to another city and being good in academics, looking for a good school and coaching for professional courses took priority over finding a good dance school. Years passedby. I went on to achieve my academic goal of working as a health professional with children. Later family and children took up priority and life went on. But its true that when you truly desire something, the universe conspires to give it to you. That’s how I came to know about EARTHA while searching for a dance class for my daughter. I enrolled my daughter for Kathak and that’s when a flier on the noticeboard caught my attention…. BA in Kathak course. I hesitantly enquired about the course and Guru RoopaRavindran explained and encouraged me whole heartedly to enrol… she said there is no age or gender barrier for pursuing ones passion for art. I was in two minds…. Would I be able to juggle a full time job, family and a demanding talent? But something inside wouldn’t let me turn away. So I enrolled for Kathak under Guru Roopa’s tutelage and there was no looking back after that. My Guru and EARTHA supported me in all ups and downs and kept edging me towards performing better and better. I got a chance to perform on stage on several occasions including the esteemed Natyanjali Festival in Chidambaram. It was a wonderful journey and learning experience. Felt proud to learn the history of this ancient form of classical dance, its evolution and the origin of Gharanas. Intact we were lucky enough to get to learn some sessions from Guru RajendraGangani of Jaipur Gharana. We could experience the wonder of Kathak from all possible avenues through EARTHA. Three years later I presented my first solo Kathak performance as my Rangmanch. I finally performed Kathak on the stage with live instruments and musicians for an entire evening! My dream had finally come true. I will be ever grateful to my Guru RoopaRavindran, my family and EARTHA for believing in my and honing my talent and passion inspite of all the challenges.
